WORLD UNIVERSITIES CONGRESS

World Universities Congress was organized from 20 to 24 October 2010 in Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey. The representatives of Higher School Agricultural College had important participations in the conference.

Coordination Committee’s Chairs were Ertuğrul Günay (Minister of Culture and Tourism) and Prof. Dr. Ali Akdemir (Rector, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University).

Among world-famous scientists in Conference’s Scientific Committees was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Rector of Higher School Agricultural College.

At its opening the significant forum was supported by Minister of National Education Youth and Sports and Minister of Transport of the Republic of Turkey, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, representatives of local authorities, Turkey Academy of Science and Turkish Council of Higher Education International Association of Universities and over 40 eminent universities from the whole world.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasko Vasilev, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mariana Ivanova and Chief Assist. Prof. Vihra Dimitrova presented a paper named Climate Change in Global, Regional and Local Aspects during the session Climate Change from Various Aspects on the themes: Understanding and Preventing Global Climate Change and Securing World Peace.

Chief Assist. Prof. Vihra Dimitrova made a report Higher Education in the Globalized World: key Elements and Perspectives on the theme The Concept of a “University” within the Light of Recent Developments: Past, Present and Future Definitions of a University.

Preventing global terrorism, eradicating global poverty and injustices, inequalities and educational opportunities, solving the problems of global migration, proposing solutions to environmental pollution, preventing regional conflicts, protecting cultural heritage, developing lasting solutions to rapid population growth, expanding the role of non-governmental organizations in local and international development and others were among other interesting themes.

The trend towards globalisation, resulting from factors such as efforts to integrate national economies, an increase in international and intercultural relations, and the disappearance of national borders in the sphere of communications, has brought with it a number of problems.

The main purpose of this congress was to discuss the role of the universities of the world in preventing global problems and provide an opportunity for academicians, university administrators, researchers and intellectuals to present their research and expertise on the subject and and sharing suggestions for lasting solutions on important global issues.

The common position was that universities must work together and redefine their goals and responsibilities. That way on the conference representatives from higher education, educational state and non-governmental institutions not only shared valuable experience and good practice but also took important decisions about questions concerning future human development.
